All About the Basics

What things come to your mind when we talk about the wardrobe basics? A white tee, a black button down, cream pants, options are plenty. Basics are the backbone of the wardrobe on which you can rely blindly to play with a lot of looks daily and occasionally.

I know there is never enough when we talk about clothes and accessories. “I have enough clothes and jewelry said no girl ever”.  Adding some meaningful basic key pieces would give a meaning to your wardrobe and make day-to-day dressing infinitely easier. Comfort and fit are the number one priority when we consider essentials. Style doesn’t have to be expensive, but it makes sense to “invest in good quality pieces and use them for a longer time”. At times we consider the price and give up on the fitting, but ill fitted clothing doesn’t oomph up our personality even if we have followed any ongoing trend.

Lot of times we see brands compromise on their fitting by lowering the prices. Mouthwatering deals can be a trap sometimes, where the quality/fittings have been compromised in some way or the other, but that doesn’t mean you must pay a hefty price to look good. There are tons of affordable retailers in the market today who make such good styles (scroll down to see options) like H&M, ZARA, GAP. You can get good pieces in the budget too, without having to compromising on the fitting. Only if you know the basic rule of the style and where to look for it.

Your choice of clothes says a lot about you. Make sure to check the fitting ratio according to the brand guidelines to ensure the garment is fitting you well. Check the shoulder line, it should not be drooping (for an oversized clothing this rule doesn’t apply of course). Drooping shoulder makes your torso look boxy, the shape of your clothing affects how people perceive you. If you want to be seen as more formal, choose a simple well fitted silhouettes in muted shades. Too tight bottoms for men are a big no-no. Outerwear (jackets, blazers etc.) should be one/two sizes up than your actual size.

Same applies to accessories, clean lines are far better than flashy clanky bracelets if you are considering a formal style, lots of accessories decrease your formality. If its casual, make sure there is only one or at the most two statement pieces (you can read more about that here) that are standing out from the whole look instead of looking like a Christmas tree. lol.

Note- Men should keep their accessory game to a minimum. A classic watch or a wedding band is sufficient. No thumb rings, kadas, chunky gold chains or weird piercings please 🙂

Here are some basic staples (Western-Indian) that I think are must haves – Happy scrolling!!
