Have you read The Art of Seduction by Robert Greene? In the book, Greene breaks down multiple archetypes, describing them as characters we can play in life and love, and he includes historical examples along the way.
Today, in the world of social media, and according to Gen Z creators, the coquette aesthetic refers to a style that emphasizes a playful and flirtatious attitude, often characterized by dainty and girly elements such as ruffles, bows and pastel colors. Basically, “Girlycore with mix of sultry Old English elegance” if that make sense.
How would I define the coquette aesthetic?
I would say, the aesthetic includes pointelle lace, satin and light pastel colors like baby blue and pink that make you think of florals or spring. The aesthetic brings out one’s most divine feminine energy, whether it’s through a dainty barrette or romantic soft curls. This aesthetic has emerged so much because we see that everyone is putting their own twist on it.
My favorite things about the trend?
For people like me, it’s an ode to connecting with our younger selves. As a kid, I loved pink (and i still do), princesses, ballerinas etc. I feel how it’s brought me back to my younger self in a way that I reconnect with my childhood. The romanticization of our lives in such a beautiful way to remind ourselves of the good around us, trends like this are truly so much more than just a trend. I love how romantic the coquette aesthetic is with a pink and white focused palette. Think about that book where you read, the princess is having a tea party, eating buttercream frosted cake with her friends, it’s all a part of the “aesthetic”.
What all things falls under this category?
Lace –
Lace is the key element to a cool girl fit. A lacy top with a maxi skirt or a baggy jean is a chef’s kiss.
Roll of Ribbon –
Tie a bow onto literally everything, not just around your neck but the desk drawer handle, purse, flower vases, headphones etc. to feel unapologetically girly.
Heart-Shaped Locket –
It’s such a romantic thing to have not only a delicate heart around your neck but sentimental photos inside as well. There’s a special energy that comes with spinning something to make it your own, that’s the magic of personalized pieces.
Ballet Flats –
While exploring the coquette aesthetic ballet flats in a classic pink, cream, black or red is a must have.
Big Scrunchie –
A scrunchie with eyelet lace, gingham or a plain satin one always adds a feminine touch, because an elevated hairstyle can also really make an outfit.
Pearl Necklace –
Nothing can beat the iconic Vivienne Westwood necklace when we talk about pearls, that style will never go out of style, it is so coquette and badass at the same time. Pearls can go either very girly or more punk in a sense.
Corset –
Any vintage designer corset is just a work of art. it doesn’t necessarily have to be designer because silhouette of a corset itself is just beautiful and adds to any look.
Below, are the pieces that suggest how to get in on the aesthetic. Happy Scrolling!!
