There was no such thing as too much in the ’80s. The more the sequins and the bigger the fur coat, the better. Nothing reminds us more of the era’s flamboyance than Dynasty reruns. Agreed, it was melodrama at its soapiest, but Alexis and Dominique’s quick-witted exchanges in padded-shoulder power blouses with the most conspicuous of statement jewelry was the show. More than 30 years later, the show’s influence in fashion is unwavering.
In a moment when uniformity and restraint have become fashion’s modus operandi, dabbling in the world of high glamour is a nice reprieve. ’80s fashion was considered as all loud and over-the-top, but there was a way to dress on the more minimal, quiet-luxury side of the spectrum during the era, one of which involves throwing on a fitted frock coat, a classic pair of black pumps, and a pencil skirt. The designer that comes to my mind while talking about this trend is, Yves Saint Laurent and the way he would use the contrast of black and ivory to make his sharp, elevated blazers and jackets from the ’80s pop. The peplum style from the S/S 1989 collection proves the timeless color palette is always a good idea. And of course, a big pair of statement earrings.Â
