The Summer Tan –

You’ve heard it before, that exfoliating is crucial to achieving the perfect glow. “Sometimes exfoliating in the shower isn’t enough as many shower scrubs leave oil on the skin, which creates a barrier that can cause self-tan to develop in a patchy fashion, or not at all.” He recommends dry exfoliating (try a dry body brush, which also helps stimulate the lymphatic system for a double-pronged effect), after you shower and before you apply self-tan.

Create faux tan lines –

“I’m a huge fan of sexy tan lines because they relate to time off, relaxation and fun,” says, Coco. “I love to create a faint line across the back, where a bikini might have been and even light flip-flop tan lines on the feet.”

Think about where the sun would hit –

“The perfect sunless summer tan should replicate where the sun would naturally hit the skin,” says Coco. “Therefore the tan should be darker in areas like the tops of the back and arms and shoulders, and lighter on the face (because obviously you’ve been wearing a hat) and the backs of the arms and knees.” Apply light layers of tan in the areas that need a little extra colour. It’s also worth remembering that less is more when it comes to applying tan – don’t apply too much product at once, and always use a mitt.

Contour –

It’s all about using self-tan to create definition and tone. “On Kendall, I applied a light layer of my Tan Souffle Face and Body ID3 Light and allowed it to develop over eight hours,” he explains. “Then, I used the ID4 Medium shade to contour and enhance her beautiful curves. I also always do my signature jawline contour for flawless facial framing.” When he tans the tops of Kendall’s shoulders, he gets her to lean forward so he can contour her collarbones, mimicking how the sun would hit them.

Go light on your face –

Coco always applies a lighter layer of tan to a client’s face because it creates a more believable glow. “At home, you could mix your self-tanner with a non-oily moisturizer to dilute the color a little,” he says. “Apply evenly around your entire face, as far into the hairline as possible, your neck (front and back), and don’t forget behind the ears.”

How to do the tricky bits –

Most people don’t have arms long enough or the energy to fake tan their back, but for a natural-looking glow, it needs to be done. “Try attaching your mitt to a wooden spoon or back scratcher and secure it with a rubber band,” he recommends. “For hands, apply a light layer of lotion to the knuckles and allow it to dry completely, if you’re in a colder environment, you should apply lotion to the entirety of the backs of your hands, too. Wait until you’ve done the rest of your body before doing your hands. I only use the residual tan that’s left over from my full body application.”

How to make your tan last longer –

• Immediately after tanning, avoid sweating – no exercise! – and swimming, bathing or showering for four to eight hours, depending on the tan development time.
• Keep your skin hydrated. I recommend applying moisturiser twice daily and drinking lots of water.
• Apply a tan extender, such as a tan-infused moisturiser, on days three or four to extend its colour.
• If you have been in the swimming pool or enjoy long workouts or oily massages, your tan may not fade evenly. A gentle exfoliation will soften any patchy areas and help to keep the tan looking good.
