First made famous by Elsa Schiaparelli back in the 1930s, and later storming into mainstream culture thanks to John Galliano and Carrie Bradshaw, the print has seen a renaissance on the catwalks over the past few seasons, and now seems to be on track to be the next “this is it” print. There are huge chances that we are going to be seeing newspaper headlines everywhere over the next season. Who could forget that newspaper print dress that Carrie Bradshaw wore in Sex and the City? It was so iconic that she wore it twice in the season three and in the film. A true fashion moment.

The return of the newspaper print is supply and demand, according to fashions’ historian and curator Shonagh Marshall, Marshall says, the young are now much more engaged in current affairs, world politics, informing their creative outcome. The print is a part of larger trend among designers and image makers to create politically engaged fashion, she added.

Today, newsprint fashion has boomed in streetwear and high fashion. The trend has evolved into not just dominating womenswear but menswear as well. and has already taken over the social platforms, from dresses to bikinis, blazers to trousers, the trendy print is going to crop up everywhere coming season. Some brands are ditching the traditional monochrome and making a real statement with more than just the words, opting for bright and neon colors covered in black type. Looks like print isn’t just for the paper, with news becoming more accessible than ever, a place you can now expect to see the latest scoop is on your clothes. wearing printed clothes may be making a statement for the wearer but for the creator, it is establishing to the world, like all respected publications who have a good sense of ethics and moral compass.

A history of newspaper print, as it storms back into style – This particular print first entered the fashion stratosphere back in 1935 when couturier Elsa Schiaparelli took press clippings written about her and transformed them into printed blouses and accessories. The designer noted in her autobiography that this idea came to her after being inspired when travelling to Denmark on holiday, where she saw fishwives in Copenhagen wearing hats made of newspaper. But research shows, Schiaparelli was not actually the first to find style inspiration of the written newspaper print but a newspaper-printed gown that was worn by Matilda Butters, the wife of an Australian politician back in 1866.

Whatever you make of it, this is a time where you don’t actually have to be a big news in order to look like it but, dressing in a print that suggests something newsworthy is certainly a clever move:)
